I can sympathize with your experience ElfN. This has happened to me many times in my 64 years, but sometimes things do break and sometimes they don’t. I can sympathize with the tractor repair place as well though for who wants to endure the reaction if it had broken. Most people are less than appreciative when a repair doesn’t work. The satisfaction of making it work yourself in spite of those that said it couldn’t be done is extremely satisfying though. Good Job!

Subject: [papercreters] Mixer progress
Terry and I got the t-bar off our mixer gearbox yesterday. He's been carting it around trying to find someone with a hydraulic press who could/would press it off. Even the local tractor repair place, the one place we thought for sure would be able to do the job, said it couldn't be done without ruining the gearbox. With a small hydraulic jack and some chain and a little judicious banging, we had it off in less than half an hour.
