[papercreters] RE: Getting Closer All the Time!

Getting Closer All the Time!
Posted by: "lebarongroup" lebarongroup@yahoo.com

Question how much shrinkage are people seeing when papercreting up (as
infill) to a beam? Any suggestions on how to finish this last gap?

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Make some small precured blocks, or blobs, and stuff them in to the
crevices. or just stop at a certain pint near the roof beam, and make
precured blocks the just slide in to the space with a little wet
mortar. if you have bad weather, then premaking blocks in sunny
times, and just loading up the framed walls can serve you well. and no
worry over long cures, mold, wet drainage down into the already
drying wall.

Re: [papercreters] Getting Closer All the Time!

The amount of shrinkage varies with the amount of water. To finish that last gap try some pc that has been drained well, and pound it in with a 2x4 and hammer. The pc we did yesterday at Judith's wasn't exactly in the snow though there was snow all around us. Freezing doesn't seem to be a problem other than ice clogging the hose at first. And frozen fingers, of course.

Drying time is a function of humidity and air flow. Temperature affects humidity and things dry slower when they are cold. Mold is not a problem if you add borax to your mix.

RE: [papercreters] Vigas on Black Friday

Wow. I enjoyed the pics of the vigas and Shadow the pup. The first pic of shadow in the jemez looked like  astuffed dog. How big is your house ,Judith?

We're coming along with our casita too and hope to have it livable by summer. It's 550 sq. ft. with a 200 sq. ft. porch and outdoor patio outside Madrid...We got stopped by the weather today. I want to install the wood, box stove, patio panel wall, and paint the inside of the adobe section with this milk paint I just bought. It appears to take less babying and work than lime plaster. It was sure pricey. It should apply itself! We still have the earthen floor to pour this summer and some exterior stuccoing. I want to enhance our solar system with another panel and 2 new batteries as well as put in a small propane stove and fridge.

Soon we'll start building our 500 sq. ft. cabin in OK and experiment with papercrete for interior walls. Our plan is to move into both our OWNER BUILT homes and sell or rent out the 4000 sq. ft. of STRANGER BUILT stuff we're currently living in. This is exciting! Take good care. Photos coming. Right after I bought my land 4 or 5 years ago I had a big load of logs delivered. I've been using them since then. The logs for this building were all peeled withing the last 2 weeks. We got them all secured up there today, evenly spaced apart and they look great. The weather is very cold with snow showers all around us so we only put in a few hours today. The last thing we did was stretch the chicken wire over the vigas. We hope to get started papercreting the roof tomorrow but will have to see how the weather is. We may wake up to several inches of snow on the ground. Spaceman has pictures to post and some video. Of course my camera has a dead battery so I didn't get any pictures.

Sincerely, Judith

This is AWESOME!!!!!

I have a question.  You used the verbiage "dozen trees".  Did you all cut down some trees and prep them by debarking and destemming them?  And were these on-site trees?   What kind of trees?  Pine?  Hardwood of some kind?  I am very curious about this part of it.  It is so... organic, for lack of a better term.  Who needs lumber when you have nice uneven TREES with character!  :D

[papercreters] VIGAS & PC pools, Cob bathtubs

Judith & SpaceDude- Very cool to see the vigas ( rough pine trees)
all lined up.

The beauty of papercrete is its ability to fill in those nooks and
crannies beautifully, for a smooth surface- if you want it smooth.

SO you pinned the trees with rebar/nails to a wood top beam? and I
see blocks of PC support the logs as they are lined up. will there
be a slope to the roof?

I recently came across a power point display on Papercrete, given in
India.. that says it can be used "for swimming pools, sinks" which of
course it cannot, in its current formulation. But the presenter was
all excited to give out great news, too bad it is misleading. Hate to
see people waste time and money ( scarce) , or materials ( pricey) and
be met with a failed pool- and no way to buy enough cement to just
fix it with a final coat. SO PLEASE help spread the RIGHT words
about PC, so it doesn't get based as a "promise all" material, when
it is not.

So as the papercrete word travels myths and legends pop up--vague-
promising- too good to be true. for instance- and I JUST got a
phone call about this yesterday! 7 years after the fact:

Several years ago a woman built a small cob house, and shaped a
bathtub of cob.. she put it in her book. she sealed the bathtub with
hemp oil, lots of it. but here is the kicker.. I talked to her,and
she never used it as a bathtub.. it was presented as an Idea-- one
that someone else had to figure out to make work.

hemp oil does seal from what I know, but standing water in cob or clay
will eventually weaken it and made muddy water. SO people still
think it is a usable cob bath tub. Sealed with a lime coat, yes, but
not by itself.

Now the Tadelakt lime plaster method of polishing black olive oil
into the wall surface as you plaster is the only method that IS able
to be used for showers, sinks, and baths.

there is a new translation of a German book now out that shows
amazing waterproofing ability of such walls. the trick is not the
lime, but the action of stone polishing soap oil into the lime ..and
it is a ton of work. a ton.

Michael Smith of Cob Cottage showed us his Tadelakt wall on ONE side
of his house, and how many weeks of polishing it took for a small
space. it is gorgeous, but worth it in his case.

the new book is finally out from the publisher, simply called
"Tadelakt" and I plan to order it and have it avail.. stunning
images of slick walls, floors, showers, like granite because of this
method.

Re: [papercreters] Re:Vigas on Black Friday

Judith poured square concrete footings in each corner and then put a rubble trench between the corners, topped with gravel. This was placed into undisturbed soil that contains a large rock component. The finished building should only weigh in the range of 6.5 tons, putting about 200 pounds per square foot load on the footing.

Don't be sorry, thanks for asking!

Re: [papercreters] Re: Vigas on Black Friday

formwork 1 is from a previous project, Shadow's house.

The rebar pin aligns and secures the vigas. It goes a couple of feet at most into the pc wall, nowhere near the ground. After the vigas were in place then a hole was drilled through both layers of logs and then the pin was driven into the dry pc wall. A small sledge hammer took care of that.

I have a couple questions, on this:

formwork1

What exactly is being formed?

And on this one:

A rebar pin down into the pc wall.

Did you pound the rebar through the wall after the fact?  And if so, how far into the ground does it go or does it?

Thanks!

I see Judith already fielded this one. The trees are pine.

Don't worry, no hurry, tomorrow we sling slurry.

I just put three more pictures in the same album. They are the inferior 2D type, but still show some information. If it doesn't snow today or tomorrow there is a possibility that we can get it covered with at least a thin layer this weekend.

So you're thinking of putting a papercrete floor in a garage? That may work if you let it cure for a long time before driving on it. I really can't say how it would work.

My house is coming along fine. I am not working on the big one that is in the DVD but a smaller one on another lot. It's 12 x 16 and we are working this weekend to get a roof on it.

Good luck with you project.

Sincerely, Judith

Thanks Judith,

I was not sure how the papercete would hold up under the weight of our car and Toyota pickup, and I had seen no articles on using papercrete on floors and driveways, so I figured it as not being used.

I have collected a pickup rear end and looking for good deal on a 200 gallon water tank, so when spring arrives, we will have everything we need to get things moving, and before the list of honey dos get to un-manageable. ...LOL

Once again, thanks for your input.  By the way how is the progress of your home going.

Regards
Ray

I switched from newspaper to cardboard when the newspaper plant locked their bins. They get money from the recycled paper and don't want anyone taking it. I started getting bales of cardboard from behind Wallgreens. I can fit 3 bales in the truck.

I like the cardboard. It's much easier to get and comes baled so it isn't blowing out of the truck. I only have to soak it for a few minutes to get it ready to mulch. It doesn't take much extra towing in the mixer to mulch it up. It mixes well with the cement and perlite, although there is a lot of plastic from the boxes, mostly tape I think. It seems to cure in about the same length of time. I like the brown color better than the gray of the newspaper. So I would say I'm very happy with the cardboard.

I would not use papercrete for a garage floor or driveway. Even if it doesn't rain a lot where you are, papercrete will break down if it gets wet and I think it would crumble.

Sincerely, Judith

Can any one tell me, if using cardboard, causes any differences one should know in construction of blocks, panels and floors. Also, wondering if anyone has set up a couple of mixers and poured (or better pumped) the papercrete like concrete into forms for walls, foundations, etc.

Also, can papercrete be used for garage floors and driveways, rather than obvious other type of yard materials (pavement, concrete, etc) .

I have checked with local food store, and they will provide as much cardboard as I want. The nice thing, paper is another story as far as supply, here in Elko, NV. The food store produce tons of cardboard a week.

Happy Thanksgiving, "May your Turkey be plump and golden brown, and the pies, cakes and cookies not find your waist line."
