all lined up.
The beauty of papercrete is its ability to fill in those nooks and
crannies beautifully, for a smooth surface- if you want it smooth.
SO you pinned the trees with rebar/nails to a wood top beam? and I
see blocks of PC support the logs as they are lined up. will there
be a slope to the roof?
I recently came across a power point display on Papercrete, given in
India.. that says it can be used "for swimming pools, sinks" which of
course it cannot, in its current formulation. But the presenter was
all excited to give out great news, too bad it is misleading. Hate to
see people waste time and money ( scarce) , or materials ( pricey) and
be met with a failed pool- and no way to buy enough cement to just
fix it with a final coat. SO PLEASE help spread the RIGHT words
about PC, so it doesn't get based as a "promise all" material, when
it is not.
So as the papercrete word travels myths and legends pop up--vague-
promising- too good to be true. for instance- and I JUST got a
phone call about this yesterday! 7 years after the fact:
Several years ago a woman built a small cob house, and shaped a
bathtub of cob.. she put it in her book. she sealed the bathtub with
hemp oil, lots of it. but here is the kicker.. I talked to her,and
she never used it as a bathtub.. it was presented as an Idea-- one
that someone else had to figure out to make work.
hemp oil does seal from what I know, but standing water in cob or clay
will eventually weaken it and made muddy water. SO people still
think it is a usable cob bath tub. Sealed with a lime coat, yes, but
not by itself.
Now the Tadelakt lime plaster method of polishing black olive oil
into the wall surface as you plaster is the only method that IS able
to be used for showers, sinks, and baths.
there is a new translation of a German book now out that shows
amazing waterproofing ability of such walls. the trick is not the
lime, but the action of stone polishing soap oil into the lime ..and
it is a ton of work. a ton.
Michael Smith of Cob Cottage showed us his Tadelakt wall on ONE side
of his house, and how many weeks of polishing it took for a small
space. it is gorgeous, but worth it in his case.
the new book is finally out from the publisher, simply called
"Tadelakt" and I plan to order it and have it avail.. stunning
images of slick walls, floors, showers, like granite because of this
method.
