[papercreters] Cardboard and Papercrete

Hi,
I have a cardboard structure that I wish to coat with papercrete.  I was told by concrete workers that cement will not stick to cardboard.  Do any of you have suggestions on bonding papercrete with cardboard

Thanks, Jimi

[papercreters] Help with ideas

Hi everyone, I'm currently compiling information for an ebook (or maybe a print book) on papercrete. I'm basically explaining how I do my papercrete but would love to include as many ideas as I can get from others. I will spend a lot of time perusing the archives and looking at other websites but genuinely welcome any information anyone may feel is valuable.

I plan to eventually sell the book but would be happy to send a free one to anyone who submits info I can use. I'll also invite you to give your contact information to be included in the book, a link to your website and a plug for your business if you have one.

I've been a member of this group from way back when and don't want any of you to think I'm using this as a venue for myself to profit. I just know I would love to have had some good advice and practical guidance when I was first starting out with papercrete and want to write a comprehensive guide for newbies and experienced papercreters alike.

Please email me privately with your info. Thanks in advance to all who respond.

Sincerely, Judith

[papercreters] paper fiber in sculpture-was DCAT

Mark P ( thanks!) sent a link to a Kibbutz.. I looked at it, and
followed the green building link.

there are cool pics of turtles and dragons for kids to play on made
of waste paper and clay, bottles, etc.

Now, they are in a real desert, so very little water to destroy or
impact the sculptures, but so fun.. there are similar sculptures at
Emerald Earth, of cob-no paper- that are kid's benches, shaped like
lizards, etc.

so lots of creativity with the same materials.

http://www.kibbutzlotan.com/community/friendsLotan/greeningLotan.htm
--

It is a bit concerning, after 12 years, to see that DCAT is not as
well known to newer builders, as to us longer in the ' green
movement'. DCAT had put out the only white papers on fire and
thermal/stress resistance for S. bale building, I hope they are not
lost to the SB world, surely not. maybe only others newer have not
heard of them. ( David E. is the key promoter )

[papercreters] Re: DCAT

Hi,

I am in Tucson and aware of DCAT. I went to one of their presentations
long ago, it might have been by David, but I don't remember. After I
decided in favor of papercrete over strawbale last year, I got focused
on preparing for build and learning to present workshops. His
assistant, Tony Novelli is aware of papercrete. I have been trying to
get their attention, but Eisenberg is too busy, and I only met Tony
personally at an Earth Day event.

So, my suggestion is that you talk to him. Feel free to mention that I
am interesested in talking to him. I am beginning some papercrete
structures and have hired Joyce Plath to design my papercrete home.

Thanks,

Vince Pawlowski

From their web site they seem to be promoting green building, have a straw bale building in Washington, DC. Could be good, could be bad.

Re: [papercreters] about DCAT

I've known David for many years and am consistently inspired not only
by the breadth and depth of his knowledge, but by his big, generous
spirit. I would heartily recommend - bordering on belligerent
insistence - that if the opportunity to attend one of his
presentations comes along in anyone's life, that they take it. DCAT's
work and message isn't generally about specific materials and methods
(though David does have a long history with strawbale).

Do you know Alex Cicelsky from Kibbutz Lotan (
http://www.kibbutzlotan.com/ ) in Southern Israel? (I'm originally
from Minnesota, and any time I meet somebody who once knew somebody
else from there, they ask if I know them. So I'm doing the same to
you.) Alex has met David and could give you an idea of whether or not
DCAT's work and message has merit for that part of the world.

[papercreters] Help Indiana- finding hydrated lime

I was able to find a small 5lb bag of hydrated lime in the garden section
____________

HI this is a small bag indeed, if you can find a farm/feed store that
caters to people with horses, cattle, then you may find a 50 lb.
standard size bag. as long as it says hydrated or high calcium or
dolomitic (dolomite) lime then you are OK. cost about $10 a 50# bag

bringing up the more confusiing hydraulic lime- this is a nautral
lime- no longer available in the US sine the cement cos. bought up all
the natural mines. a hydraulic ( wayer loving ) lime has lay and
minerals in it, and will set up to limestone again when mixed with
water.. like Portland Cement does

the French and Israeli imports of Natural Hydraulic limes are very
pricey, since they mix in the SAND portion to the dry lime.

it was necessary as people goofed up the product, and blamed the
maker, so now they ship it, 3 times as heavy, but with the right sand
mix in it. the St Austier lime co, www.limes.us has a ton of info
on plastering and using lime in building, but it is spendy! you an
achieve a lot with regular HYDRATED lime- which cures by absorption of
air, not the water. clear as mud?

HYDRATED- can sit in water and stay soft for decades- called lime
putty when in water, add sand and now called plaster or mortar, or
render

HYDRAULIC- sets up fast when water is added- imported into US.

The ement companies add clay to lime to make commercially produced
cement, and owning the natural hydraulic lime mines was a smart move,
but took our natural lime off the market forever. I resent that.

Re: [papercreters] Help in Indiana...please!

Try a shop that caters to builders, or a masonry supply place. HD & Lowes don't carry lime here either, but I found Type S at a well-stocked local lumberyard that caters to the tradespeople rather then Johnny DIY.

Subject: [papercreters] Help in Indiana...please!

I am trying to buy lime "Hydrated Lime N or S" to use in the Chinese plaster recipe I was able to find here by Charmaine. Now this is where I am getting into trouble. Neither Lowes nor Homedepot carry lime so I called a cement finishing company thinking they would know where I can buy it but they did not know about lime either. They gave me a number to another company that gave me the number to a calcium products Inc. that said they have #80 lime (and had never heard of hydrated lime)that they sell in pallet bulk, 5 pallet minimums.

They told me to buy Harpers field lime or athletic field marker at a local feed type store. But no one seems to know what the difference between field lime and hydrated lime.

If there is anyone out there that can help me please do. I have between 800 and 1,000 lbs of pulverized paper sitting in my front room that I would like to start using. I will be picking up anther 3-500 lbs of paper this week.

I would be grateful for any help you can offer.

Jeanne

RE: [papercreters] Re: Press

I haven’t checked lately, so it may have changed, but the ash here is combined with water and pumped back into the mine sites and is unavailable.  I spent lots of time trying to get it and even got samples, but they said it wasn’t going to happen.  It’s a lower quality ash as well.  I spoke with one contractor that was bringing some in from Canada but would only sell me carload quantities which would require a Silo that cost about 50 thousand to erect here plus shipping in special trucks from Anchorage.

By the time it’s sacked and delivered here it costs more than cement.  Cement is pretty pricy as well at $16/sack.

Anywhere they have coal burning plants would work. 9% of the electricity
in Alaska is produced with coal and over half the electricity in Montana
is made with coal and even a bit in Washington State. There has to be
fly ash a lot closer to Alaska than Texas. I would start with Alaskan
coal plants.

[papercreters] Re: Help in Indiana...please!

Lime is confusing. Don't buy field marking lime though. The MSDS says it's just montmorollinic clay (sp?).

Lowe's and a local Feed store both carry the right stuff and it does say in big letters on the bag that it's Hydrated. Lowe's was cheapest but I was so excited to find it in the feed store I got a bag at $10/50# bag. Lowe's was $7.75 for the same exact manufacturer's product...Texas Lime Co. in Cleburne, TX.

So far we have tested some in applications with flyash, property silt and rocks to see how fly-crete works. So far, it seems really good and should continue gaining strength for years. It's workable at low water content and sets up really fast. Short pot life and development of strength takes longer than portland cement according to what we've read. The short pot life has been verified so far. Anyone know what might slow it down?

No! Don't! Adding drywall BAD!

My partner has been studying concrete chemistry and drywall
creates a self expanding mess in portland cement. In fact
it forms "ettringite" which is blast-less demolition material
that expands with many PSI force to break apart rock and solid
structures.

She says if you instead add class C flyash to your portland
cement (up to 60%) you will have a stronger concrete and use
less water. Flyash can be gotten really cheap since it is a
product of coal burning power generation plants. We priced it
and in 50# bags it's only $2/bag from Fritz Industries. No
idea how cheap in large shipments but a lot of the $2/bag
was the inconvenience of bagging it.
