[papercreters] Re: Auger type tow mixer

Exactly.

The ability to simply scoop up the heaviest ingedients from a pile would be extra nice.

I agree that a faster spin rate would be helpful. Adding some teeth to the auger edges would help shred the paper too.

Of course... if you have a front-end loader, no reason why you couldn't use the simple bucket as a tool to help load ingredients into a more traditional mixer. It shouldn't be too difficult to come up with a way to drain a mixer into a loader so that it can lift and place the slurry where you want it.

No need to get all complicated with the system.

[papercreters] Auger type tow mixer

I wonder if anyone else has had this idea of using an auger (screw)  instead of a lawn mower blade? I can also see making it into a stationary mixer very easily using a side shaft motor and maybe a slip clutch to get it up to speed slowly. The far end of the auger could be inside a larger pipe with holes in the side of the pipe to force the pulp through. It would work a lot like a kitchen sink garbage disposer. The screw compactor post I made a while back http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzHyMwfUNbc&feature=related gave me the idea. But instead of turning slow dry I think turning fast in water would do the trick as well.

[papercreters] Re: Pressed Blocks

What I really wanted to ask about is the 1, 2, and 3 pictures of your pressed blocks.  Did you use the press you had made with the air assist bottle jacks, or a new method?

Yes, I used the air assisted bottle jack to make all the blocks and the 4" PVC pipe tube block.

I still think that is the way to go.  A guy could build bricks all winter and sell them in the spring.  You are in the industry, how much does one of those 7-5/8 X 7-5/8 X 15-3/8 hollowed out bricks run anyway (that may not be the current dimensions as I took the measurements off one laying around here that may date to the 30's)?  If they are less than $2.00 a piece that is probably too competetive for our labor intensive bricks, but if they are closer to 3 then the idea is intriguing.

The price for what they call for is 8x8x16 but your measurements are what they actually are, that allows for a morter bed, and they run about $1.95 each. But you have to figure in additional cost for morter and a brick layer and that adds about$4.00 more to the cost. That is why I think the T Lox Block have it made over the conventional laying method.

I head up the Alcan for Alaska tomorrow so I am in the throes of cleaning up, prepping for the sojurn, and closing the place up for the winter.
I see a new mixer, an axle change with a vehicle for power, and a press on next summer's agenda.  A stationary tow mixer is going to be parked in the middle of the next structure I build with a mountain of paper nearby.  We'll see.

I going to post pictures of my press as soon as I get time, I think everybody that is thinking about pressing will like the idea. I also have a new idea for a mixer, using your idea of an auger inside a tank running across the middle or bottom of the tank. The setup would be much the same as the tow mixer except it would have four wheels instead of just two, the tank would be placed between the two sets of wheels and the u-joint connection would be in the side of the the tank with the augar on the end of it and it would run across the tank and be supported on the opposit end so it would stay straight, the vortex would run right to left instead of top to bottom. Just something that popped into my head.

You seem to have a goodly supply of paper where do you get it?  When I'm here for the duration (retired) I can set up a regular pick-up route to obtain paper on a regular basis, but I live (as many of us do) out in the sticks so the weekly route will be 60 to 70 miles.

My wife works at a Doctor's clinic with three or four doc's and her clinic, and also where I work at City Hall, it is amazeing how much paper is shred everyday at these places, and they always put it into plastic bags. They would be very thankful if someone would pick it up so they don't have to haul it to the dumpster.

[papercreters] Pressed bricks

Bob,
Your overhang enclosure looks fantastic.  I am embarrassed to put pictures of my project up after seeing yours.  I wonder if the dryness of your mix has anything to do with the nice regularity I see in your wall.  Or, it could be the clay content (I don't have any here).

P.S. I didn't use a plastic bag, I used that stuff you wrap up multiple

P.S. I POSTED PICTURES OF THE MOLD(S) AND THE NEWLY POURED STONE.  The other molds I pictured are other molds that I made of stones using 10w30 motor oil as a release agent on the original stone (it didn't work) I had to force the original stones out of the papercrete and broke the papercrete mold doing so. It even happened on the first one and I was able to repair that mold with just carpenters glue. I will repair the other two the same way and using your plastic wrap idea they should last a very long time.

RE: [papercreters] Photo preview of slurryguy driving to Abiquiu

Slurryguy, how did you  know that was one of my alltime very favorite movies? I must say that the road to Aspen looks very much like the road to Abiquiu. Can't wait to meet Jim Carey and What's his name.

Sincerely, Judith

LOL... OH man that was a good laugh!

I loved that movie!  I have a nephew that does every character perfectly.

Taking a cue from Spaceman, I also fired up Google earth to see a preview of my thousand mile journey to Abiquiu.

I was surprised to see that Google would actually create a video clip of me driving my vehicle through the route.

Here is a portion of my trip uploaded to YouTube.

Somehow Google knew someone would be carpooling with me. Anybody recognize themselves in the video?

It was interesting but surely did take a long time. And that's at accelerated speed, it will be a long drive in reality.

Is there now an airport in Santa Fe, or is Albuquerque still the closest one?

Subject: [papercreters] Cement Mixer

Hi,

I am new to this forum. What a great idea to get people of like mind together and support each other. We have felt alone somewhat in this endeavor.

Thank you Judith for telling me about this forum.

Anyway, my partner and I are in the middle of building our papercrete home and our engine died on the mixer. Now we are rethinking how to make this less labor intensive and have the walls go up quicker.
Aaron is thinking of using a shredder/chipper for the paper and pouring that into a cement mixer. Does anyone have an extra cement mixer around we could borrow or know where we might find a deal on one to buy?

We live in southern Co, not far from Alamosa.

Any ideas about this would be appreciated.
Sharron

RE: [papercreters] Driving to Abiququ for PC meet

There is a small airport in Santa Fe but it is expensive to take the hop from Alb. then you still have to drive an hour to get to Abiquiu. Most people just land in Alb and drive up from there. It's just under 2 hrs.

Sincerely, Judith

When I lived in central Or I used to drive straight west across the state, down through Idaho, Utah, SW CO, the Four Corners area. It was 24 hrs exact. If I got tired I pulled over in Moab to sleep for an hr or 2. Nice ride.

I guess you'll have to decide if you drive or fly. I'm not sure what I'd do but you have dogs to consider etc. I'm really looking forward to meeting you so hope you make it.

I really can't wait to meet everyone.

wow.. I just ran a mapquest-- for me it will be 1453 miles, and 22+
hours driving, so 3 8 hour days since I can t drive 12 hours a day
anymore-- 8 is my full limit.

makes flying sound good, and def. will find a dog sitter.

we have no real airline service to anywhere here, so will also check
out flying If I must.

the worst part is driving towards Los Angeles, my most unfavorite city.

I MUST focus on the end reward!

I would consider picking up some one on the way!!! ... I can email
the full route to anyone who is South of me and interested to travel
along, and share gas.

we could meet up at some point, and either I come to you, or you meet
me close to the route at a public place where you can park your car
for a week
( I dont really want to drive 100 miles out of the way to pick up
folks if I dont have to.)

so I am tossing that out as an invite. 101 South from Eureka CA
thru SF, Bakersfield, above LA, Flagstaff across the 1-40 thru AZ
to ALbu. to Judiths

am willing to pick up a 3nd or 4th person at short distance too.

email me if interested, and I will send the route I have
