I'm pretty sure some of the larger wire welders can handle thick material very well. Of course, they aren't as easily portable as the smaller/cheaper tacklebox sized wire welders. Some of the newer high power wire welders are more like ice-chest sized. That's still doable if someone has one and is willing to bring it. They are very pricey machines to purchase new, and hard to find used.
Nothing wrong with arc/stick welding for building a mixer, though. It's certainly a much cheaper type of welder to purchase.
