Re: [papercreters] Re: Press

Back during the first oil crunch I went and talked to a big wig with the
EPA about insulation.
I was selling storm windows in Houston ,Texas and was making money hand
over fist.
That was until my customers who I had told would reduce their bills by
adding them actually received higher ones. He explained what should have
been obvious that the heat load comes from the roof 80% and adding storm
windows does little to reduce heat gain but are wonderful for holding it in.
Therefore the a/c will run longer at night and you wind up with an
increase in power usage.
Just because a certain insulator is beneficial in one environment it can
be just as detrimental in another.
I don't buy the story about mutations and ns but it is a similar principle.

He told me that dead air pockets are the insulator and that is why
foam with its millions of individual dead air pockets is much more
effective than say a storm window. It would seem you could possibly
get a slight increase by compressing the papercrete which the data seems
to bear out.
A lot of this seems counterintuitive at first. People cover their
cyclone vents in the winter to try and save energy and it does the
opposite. The most important thing about insulation is keeping it dry
because the moisture collapses the air pockets. For the same reason it
makes no sense to seal under modular homes with skirting. Spend a
little extra and insulate the pipes and put electric resistance heating
tapes on them and ventilate well. That would be a great use for papercrete .
