[papercreters] Just starting out in BC Canada

Hi All,

Sasha here from Hornby Island BC Canada

www.hornbyisland.com

Anyway, my wife and I have the foundation cleared for a 900sf PC studio up here.

You can view the latest floorplan at:

http://www.floorplanner.com/projects/18935535-studio

Which by the way is a cool fr*ee tool for doing floorplans and testing ideas. Its web based and much easier and faster than SketchUp.

The mixer is under construction in the garage and we plan to use a rubble trench foundation with salvaged creosote treated 6x12s on the flat, then covered with torch on to keep the smell under control as a stem/retaining wall.

I am thinking of doing monlithic wall pours in forms between a post and beam superstructure with roof on before PC work begins.

The site is south exposed and well drained and because of the slope I think my mixer outlet will be above the top of the walls which means I can use a chute to deliver the PC (if all goes well!).

My question is: are there any other BC/Washington/Alsaka papercreters who have a building up and running?

Also: How effective is it to build up to a beam or overhead member (like Ron and Doris's walls) Nice going by the way!!

I have Solberg's book as well as other natural building books but nobody is talking directly about BC winters and PC.

We will be using large overhangs of course and keeping the PC well off the ground, sloping the soil away from the house, perimeter drains
and all the rest just wondering if anyone has already done it here in BC.

I have seen examples of PC used in walls with a mix of 60% kayolin coated magazine pulp 30% sand and 10% portland that have stood outside uncovered for 11 years with no significant degradation that I could see. When I rapped on the wall (in summer) it rang just like wood. So that encourages me, but the fear of mold or slow set up times has me a bit worried at the same time.

Ron and Doris: Are you still placing PC in the rain and snow? Curious to find out if it will set up in cold/high humidity conditions.

Anyway: Thanks for the great information and openness to sharing with the world.

Cheers,

Sasha (and Amy)
