You ALL are all right in one way or other about lime use.
Ag lime and HYDRATED lime can be found at feed or/ horse or garden
supply. or in many larger tores...a local Building supplier to the
trades (not Home despot) will have bagged hyd lime)
Hyd lime is used to resolve muddy/wet dirt...wheres Ag lime will not
stabilize muddy dirt much at all. ( very temporary at best)
Hyd lime is used for plasters, in gardens ( it DOES sweeten pH, Ag
lime does very little) Hyd lime is also used in outhouses,to lower
mold, and Hyd lime can't be beat for pure plasters and mortars of
great endurance.
there is ton of free info onlimeonthe web..just search.
as a historical note the reason Aglime is even sold for barns, and
outhouses, and sweetening the soil and etc is WAYYYY back in the 1920s
there was a HUGE amount of ground limestone (inert) avail..and the
salesmen were all told togoout and promote it heavily to get ridof it.
Told to me by Harry Francis a ret. lime expert at Nat.Lime Assoc.
he has provided me with 1900s salesmen's books, and promo sales
info..it's an eye opener.
100 years later people still till it into the fields, it does help a
wee bit, where Hyd limie will do more, even 1% to 2% can reduce
swelling, cracking, and stablize muddy soils anyplace in your yard.
all around my yard I rototilled Hyd lime into thesoil ( has sandy clay
dirt) and now have a nice more compacted landscape I do not have to
mow..just pull a weed here and there if they pop up.
and bark or mulch,or stone pavers can be used for a NO mow yard..my
favorite kind.
if you have a hilly, uneven, small, patchy, bumpy yard, why breakyour
neck mowing?
the Japanese do this all the time in walkways around their small
yards...I got a recipefrom a USA list member in working in Japan who
sees what they do--no need to mow there either..and stones and bark
look great in a nice ground pattern...dont see many yards there do
you? it is because hyd lime solves the issues.
so 1-% ~4% Hyd lime tilled in or spread and raked into the soil can
stabilize it, then level or tamp firmly some builder spread the 50#
bags of ag lime, and drive a car oftruck back and fort, and foot
traffic ( no flipflops-real boots) will do the rest.
then you can have fun finding old metal grates, signage, stones and
rocks, tiles and other art to make walkways.
