[papercreters] Re: One way to deal with zoning and planning.

This family has taken a HUGE RISK.

Their financial future is tied up in the decisions of a government
entity that they openly admit to defying.

While I admire their drive and tenacity, their methods are likely to
send them to the poorhouse.

I don't like government over-regulation either, but the way to get
around it is not to break the law. This family openly broke the law
and admits it.

The best way to build the structure you want is to make friends with
the local building department, not enemies. Talk to them early in
the process. Build a small experimental structure with their
guidance so that you can show them what you are planning.

This family might manage to keep their house by investing large
amounts of money in lawyers. The resale value of an illegally built
structure will suffer greatly. Insurance will be difficult, if not
impossible to get. They probably have taken the most expensive
possible.

If they somehow manage to keep their house after spending all this
money on a legal fight, they are still going to be surrounded by
neighbors that resent them. What a horrible environment to raise
children. Teachers and parents of other children will lable that
family as the "lying family" or "the law breakers" or something
else. Everything the children do will be doubted because of the
track record of their parents. I pity those poor kids. They will
have a very difficult time growing up in that environment.

I admire anyone that has the energy, skill, and commitment to build
their own home. Someone that blatantly defies the law to do it is
utterly foolish.
