Re: [papercreters] Re: progress photo

That's because in order to see attached/inserted photos you have to be getting individual posts. Yahoo strips them from the digest and does not save them on the site.

Too bad I missed you last year, but then not too much was going on. A small pc dome, a doghouse, not much else.

So far no takers but a class from a local community college is coming out Monday to sling slurry and maybe fill some tires.

Re: [papercreters] Finished Frame

Thanks Ev. I was so tired I just sat on the ground to take this shot, but I was also thrilled that the frame is finally finished. This is the first 5 frequency dome frame I have designed and after my helpers got a few struts in the wrong place I was starting to doubt myself. It all turned out fine after we found the mistakes.

Vedr. [papercreters] Re: Using papercrete to insulate the chimney in a rocket mass heater

I hear you:-)
My experience is very limited, I'm currently using papercrete to insulate my walls, I will use stones on the outside, and probably Tadelakt on the inside. I can't put borax in the mix, because it's sold at the Pharmacy here, at 73 dollars pr. 30 grams. As a private person I cannot buy it in bulk, I did file a request to the department of "pollution and the climate", to get a form "application to use toxic and very toxic products" that I would have to fill inn, and get the police to sign - but the department have to send me the form, and I only got a reply from the department "we have registered your request", hehe, some months back, and I don't think I will hear from them again.. Norway.. Not that long ago they made it mandatory to report any changes made to "your" bathroom to the state, but they didn't pull it off and had to annul it - many state jobs were lost..
Back to the topic, I'm still not sure if I'm going to use papercrete to insulate the chimney, but if I do I will add a lot of cement - I think it should work if I have enough cement mix, like it has been suggested here before.

Hello--so far I've mostly been a "wishful lurker" to this site(wanting to use papercrete extensively, only being able to dabble a bit, reading whatever time allows). Having used a rocket stove last year in the house we are in the process of building, this post caught my attention, so I thought I might reply with what little bit of experience I have.

A couple of years ago we were lucky enough to find (at a yard sale) a 3' tall (approx) metal box with a 6" stove pipe attached inside (I think it was made to be used as a double-wall to insert through a wall). When we got to the stage we were ready to build our rocket stove, we simply filled the space between the pipe and the box (about 1-2" wide) with wood ashes. We figured it was the perfect insulator--non-flammable, non-heat-conductive (is that a word?) and cheap.

To make a long explanation short, we set it up on a couple of cinderblocks, the 55 gallon barrel fit down exactly over the top of it onto the same cinderblocks with a couple-of-inches space at the top, a 6" elbow pipe fit in at the back for the smoke to go out, the burn box between the cinderblocks and out the front was made out of bricks, then we built a wooden box around the cinderblocks and filled it with plain dirt to cover all the air cracks. We didn't have to cut any holes in anything metal--which was good because we didn't have any way to do that.

On the subject of papercrete, several years ago I was doing some experimenting with papercrete (did you know, by the way, that while papercrete "bricks" are setting you can place small rocks/other articles in the top in different patterns and they turn out beautiful? Don't try putting the rocks in patterns in the bottom of the molds, however, because they fall out later). Anyway, I had made a few blocks and, as it was somewhat cold outside at the time, I had set them up next to our woodstove to dry faster. That evening I noticed one had fallen over quite close to the stove and had started to smoke a bit, so I took it outside and leaned it up against the aluminum siding on the porch, figuring it would just go out since there was only a little smoke and no actual fire. The next morning I went out to get it, and it was gone--for a moment I wondered who had taken my papercrete block, then I noticed a small pile of ashes on the porch, and a yellowed spot on the aluminum siding. Can anyone say "smoldering?"

After that experience, I myself wouldn't use papercrete anywhere near extreme heat unless some type of fireproofing (borax, maybe) had been added--maybe not even then just to be safe. We're actually in the process of getting our rocket stove ready to place cob/clay around it to turn it into a mass heater this year. We are, however, planning on using papercrete as mortar between stone/cordwood on the outside of our house and maybe on one of our interior walls for a pattern/texture when we get that far ;p

Re: [papercreters] Ready for volunteers

Thanks, Ev. I'm going to work smart so the pc should go fast and easy IF I can keep my paper supply line running. Even working in the hole as the temperature drops at night shows how great it will be once sealed. T shirts down in the hole, up on the surface you need a jacket and that's with an open top! I look forward to being at a comfortable temperature year round : )

snow? what's that? like rain but when it is cold? we don't get any of that...

Seriously, first frost will come within a month probably, would like to get some pc on before then. Around here there is no problem working right on through the winter, but I would prefer to have my roof drying out before the end of the world on 12-21.

[papercreters] Low-end Power Washer Did Top Job Pulping for Me

Haven't been here for almost a year. But thought I'd share this as someone might find it useful.

Saw a well-rated (in comments from buyers) 1500 psi pressure washer available for $100 from Home Depot.

That's about 1,000 psi lower than has previously been recommended here for paper pulping.

Still, thought I'd experiment with it. If it didn't do the job, I had 90 days to return it.

It's this model: AR Blue Clean1500 psi 1.58 GPM Portable Electric Pressure Washer with Total Stop System

For my first two experiments, I used it in a 5 gallon pail 1/2 filled with paper pressed down well. Mostly newsprint and mail -- junk mail letters and envelopes. Heavy-weight stationery but no cardboard.

I did add water to the pail to just cover the top of the paper and let it all soak for about 30 minutes before pulping.

The little 1500 psi pressure washer did an astounding job.

No attachments. No rotary attachment as has been recommended here. Just the wand adjusted to the finest spray. I pumped it up and down through the paper and moved it around the floor and walls of the bucket. Took less than five minutes and I had oatmeal. Was not at all strenuous.

I DID wear a face shield and hat and neoprene gloves. And that was important, as there is a lot of flyback. My shoes got papered even.

Next move is to a 50-gallon drum. Think this is a useful pulping solution for those working with small batches at a time.

No idea how long this pressure washer will hold up. SHOULD have bought the 3-year extended warranty-replacement plan for $10, but didn't. Meant to, but the 30 days to do got away from me before I had tested the washer to see if it would work for my intended purpose.

I also used it to mix relatively thick mud and lime. For that I measured the lime and the clay into the pail and then pumped the pressure washer up and down and around until I had a thick soup developing and then stirred with the wand while spraying. Worked well, but I do worry about snapping the wand in two doing this.

Hope that's useful for someone.

[papercreters] Cement, papercrete and hypertufa

One reason "old concrete guys " might look askance at papercrete is it violates some basic guidelines. Concrete is a crystalline sturucture. making crystals means a holding concrete insolution long enough for it to develope big crystals. In concrete slabs they might be covered with burlap, or plastic or sprayed with a sealer like gum arabic. This serves to keep the water from escaping too quickly. {experience Arcosanti in central Arizona}
While reading an article on hypertufa ( a mix of peatmoss, sand and Portland cement) used to make planters and planting troughs of all sizes; the author advocated removing the troughs from their molds asap and covering with plastic for two weeks (normal concrete is said to gain 70 % of its "strength" in the first two weeks. One of y'al making blocks might want to try this technique and see if affects the strenght of the finished product. Hypertufa is preferred for garden troughs as you can leave it out thru the winter and not have the frost crack it.

Re: [papercreters] Using papercrete to insulate the chimney in a rocket mass heater

Way back years ago someone posted that they had used papercrete blocks to build a fire pit, and after several fires the bricks were black but not degraded. I don't remember seeing a follow up report later.

I would think that if pc is used in an area without really high temperatures then no problem for sure. In really high temperatures I would expect the paper fibers to char and leave the cement matrix behind, which is good insulation like foamed concrete. As Kim said, high cement content would be recommended.

Re: [papercreters] Using papercrete to insulate the chimney in a rocket mass heater

Greetings,
We have used it, but we went really heavy on the portland cement. Like
3 to 1, portland to paper by weight. No sand in the mix. The building
was hit by a near miss tornado, and was structurally damaged, so I can't
tell how long it lasted before degrading, as it was only use for part of
a season in Texas, which are short heating seasons to start.

The dirt work has been less than fun, shovels are my least favorite tool! But this is the first 5 frequency dome I've done other than models, and that is great fun : )

    racing the frost...

I should have all the pc triangles cast in the next couple of weeks, and placed before the end of Oct, ready for topcoat and seal. The small dome in the background will be moved over the entrance to the underground rooms.

Just google it, or search on Youtube. Why spend time collecting, hydrating and chewing up cardboard (which has weight) when you can just blow bubbles into cement? You need a mixer, a compressor, a hose/screen (to blow bubbles through) and the surfactant.

Actually, papercrete will always have a place; it's infinitely more sculptable than foam, and probably stronger, but for blocks and panels, foam is the way.
