Re: [papercreters] footing for papercrete blocks

There are lots of choices for foundations, including rubble trench, with an overhang to prevent the rain from hitting the pc and to minimize ground splash.

The pc 10" under slab for the dome I'm in right now was poured onto poly sheets laid onto sand, and with slits cut to let the pc drain, then capped with 2" of concrete containing pex tubing for hydronic heating and cooling. As I have been pouring the 12" shell up the sides, sand has blown in and filled around the slab up about halfway. Shadow dug down next to the slab looking for coolth, and exposed a nice sample. After almost two years it looks great and makes a nice cave for him.

I do live in an arid region, 8.5" of rain in a good year, so YMMV. If you live in a rain forest then you might want footings a couple of feet up before switching to papercrete.

Any house needs a good pair of boots and a nice secure hat.

Question for the experienced, I read that papercrete doesn't weather well next to water; hence its not structurally a sound idea to lay them directly on the ground. So I guess the foundation footing and the first row of blocks would best chosen traditional concrete mix + cinder blocks, then papercrete atop of the first row on up. Is this correct?
