Greetings,
No tricking required. But, people pay real money to learn many types of
alternative building. But many people can't afford the courses. Those
people are more than happy to come and work, to learn, to experience the
project. We have a group of people that all want to build their own
homes, so what they learn from us, they will take to their projects.
And, we will help them get their homes built. Quid pro quo, works.
We very often have found a small fee to come and do a hands on workshop
has a much better attendance than a free one. That is where Tom Sawyer
comes in. People believe that they get what they pay for, so if it is
free, it can't be worth anything. So, you have to charge a bit. For
us, it is not a money maker, as the money goes into food and beverages.
And many people that attend the workshop want more experience, so they
feel confident going home and doing it themselves. They tend to stick
around and become 'full time' volunteers.
However, I do plan on doing much of the work myself. There is a real
sense of satisfaction in building your own home, with your own hands.
Bright Blessings,
Garth & Kim Travis
