Re: [papercreters] Re: Preventing Tool Theft

Hi everyone, and thanks for the humorous welcome :-)

Errmm... well, I did have an invisible cloak, but I lost it in the wash. I think. I had it, I washed it, and then it just wasn't there anymore - possibly it was water soluble. Not sure.

I had another idea about putting identification marks on/into tools - print up identifying labels, clean the tools, apply the label then coat it in varnish. In theory (I think, anyway...) the varnish coating should make it quite time consuming to 'de-label' the tool and thus reduce it's attractiveness to would be thieves.

Of course, this is only really relevant if they're being stolen for resale, and / or if the person who's selling them is intending to pass them off as their own tools. Miscreants stealing them for their own use probably won't care either way.

And, of course, it wouldn't be difficult to paint over it - but then the patches of paint themselves would be a giveaway. I think - ?

Finally, it occurred to me that if all of the tools are kept in a single container it might be a good idea to place a GPS tracker into/onto the container. Put a SIM card into the tracker and program it so that if it moves the device will alert you via a pre-programmed mobile number (your own, obviously...) I have one of these gizmo's but have yet to use it (It's to go into a project car I'm slowly putting together) and they're not overly expensive - around $100AU from memory. It's slightly larger than a packet of cigarettes. I can also send the device a text message and have it send back it's most recently recorded GPS co-ordinates.

So, if one had a container that was stolen then you'd know as it was happening and you could track it in real time as it was moved. Assuming it's not stored out of sight of the GPS satellites and / or cell-phone reception, it should be reasonably straight forward to find it.

This is based on the same idea but looks to be more advanced that what I've got:

Also, you'd need to rig up a small solar panel - or connect to power in some other way - to keep it operational.

Hope this is of use to someone!

Cheers,
Blake.

A friend of mine has a place way out, making me look like a city dweller. He dug a hole, put his tools in it, and then covered it with a ratty old piece of plywood like it was just dropped and left there. Nobody ever bothered to look under it, or stole the plywood.

It would take a large hole to conceal a cement mixer and several ladders.

While we are on the subtopic of cloaking technology... What about cloaking our tools? If thieves cannot find the tools or other valuables, they'll be a lot more difficult to steal. Get creative. Build a hidden location to store valuable tools and equipment. This basic concept has been utilized to make home safes and secret compartments for years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZOlHyuExz0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iEOzeNYd1o
There are hundreds of other examples on YouTube. Out in the middle of the desert, what about building a buried root cellar with a hidden hatch? Perhaps that hatch could be made to appear like indigenous rock? We already have several Papercreters who have made faux rocks out of papercrete. ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
