A semblance of sensibility would include not trying to scare people needlessly.
As I said in my post. I recommend gloves and eye protection.
However, if someone chooses not use them it need not be treated as if lime is radioactive caesium or VX nerve gas.
Clearly it is best to avoid getting ANYTHING in one's eye, except perhaps water contact lenses.
That said, Lime in someone's eye, while never a good thing, need not necessarily cause blindness. Common sense dictates washing the eye out quickly as soon as any foreign substance gets in your eye. Lime is no different.
There are plenty of household cleansers sitting underneath most people's kitchen sinks that are more hazardous than lime. People generally don't freak out if someone cleans their kitchen with those cleansers in SPRAY BOTTLES without using eye protection and often without gloves.
I agree. A semblance of sensibility is warranted. That happens to be exactly what I was posting about and advocating.
Face facts. Building Construction is hazardous. Risks are involved.
If someone wants to be 100% risk free, they should curl up in the fetal position in a padded room, eat only mushy sterilized food, drink distilled water, and never have physical contact with any unsterilized human, animal, or object. It would be a completely pointless lifestyle, but to each their own.
I don't have the statistics, but I suspect more people are injured while driving to the store to purchase lime, than are injured working with the lime at a construction site, and most of those lime associated injuries probably come from falling off ladders and scaffolding while spreading lime plaster on a wall or ceiling, not from burns.
The risks of using lime should be understood and RESPECTED. NOT FEARED.
While I recommend using gloves and eye protection when working with lime, if someone wants to build a house and not wear gloves or goggles while using lime, I applaud them for getting off their butt and building something.
Semblance of Sensibility INDEED.

Papercrete in all it's various forms is a great medium and there are plenty of proven ways to accomplish our goals of a cheap environmentally friendly building medium without this.
