Yes, Dan, it's the nopalitos that you need for the sealant, not the seed-filled fruit. So make cactus wine. And your sealant won't be purplish-red.
Not everyone here knows the proper Spanish term and the nopalitos are often referred to by los Americanos as "paddles" as they are the shape of ping-pong paddles.
In one video I saw last year, the softened, spoiling skins were fished out of the mash after a few days, leaving just the gel in the buckets.
