Excellent suggestion Bob. I was going to put a 1/2" plywood skirt from the inside of the top of the form to hang down the necessary 8" to cover the gap in the lower two blocks. That would have consumed 2 pieces of plywood 16"X33" each and be a permanent part of the mold (more than 2 sheets of plywood for my 8 forms). I can make the skirts the way you describe with half of that and attach them to the molds with a couple of clamps.

When you say "with half of that" do you mean 1/2 ply wood? If you have enough 2x6's laying around I'd use them instead of 1/2 plywood. The materials to build you forms out of 2x6 would be something like this for one form:

  • (4) 2x6 cut to length 39" long (this also includes the skirts)
  • (2) 2x6 cut to length 8" long (screw these so the inside form edge is 3" from each end, that will give you you 6" lock and allow you to place one form against another for as long as you need)
  • (4) 2" wood screws  to screw into the 8" end pieces
  • (4) 2x2 39" long (to clamp the skirts onto the form
  • (16) 2 1/2 wood screws to screw the 2x2's onto the bottom of the forms and the tops of the skirts. (the skirts in a pinch could be converted into extra forms with just the addition of two 2x6x8" and four more 2" screws.

If you were to use all 2x6's and they are all just scraps then you wouldn't have to buy anything except maybe the screws.

My 3 wheeler shed is only 15'X8" so the longer forms you mention will be unwieldy for this project.

How are you going to attach the top plate to the walls and or foundation?
 Thanks for the tip!
 Ron
