In one of my Indian craft books, you build the frame first with willow branches. They burn away when you light it.

my suggestion would be cob.  If you want to cover the outside of the oven with papercrete bricks for more insulation, that should help retain the heat.  But doing the oven in cob, and after a few firings (so as to have it dry out well) then cover in papercrete bricks, should give you an over that will retain heat well.
