Re: [papercreters] Mixer Video + Quentin and Others

No video, but pictures and narrative at

http://www.starship-enterprises.net/Papercrete/Barrel%20Mixer/Barrel%20Mixer.html

The page says that the mixer doesn't work, but changing to a smaller blade fixed it. I never got around to revising the page to reflect that. Later I changed the lawn mower engine to an electric 1hp motor that works fine with a pulley and belt system. If you use an electric motor it is important to not overload it by feeding in paper too fast, or the motor will overheat and eventually (or quickly) burn out.

The large warning that the mixer is dangerous is REAL and was put there for legal reasons. I'm not interested in being sued because someone built something from sketchy plans on a website, so if you make the attempt, do so at your own risk.

Thanks for some good info regarding construction of a 55 gal drum papercrete stationery mixer. Still, there seems to be no actual video on how to construct one. I have purchased a video on how to construct a tow mixer. Surprised to hear that an electric motor will not work since I know there are electric hand held drill like mixers used for mixing mortar. A group like this is great to share what has been tried and works. I've seen video with a huge stationery mixer powered by a car whose axle runs the mixer blade but that would be overkill for me. Also have seen modest and somewhat flimsy looking units with a motor on top. I once spoke to Mike McCain about his version of a 55 gallon mixer but he has moved on to the tow mixers and feels its the only way to go from what I gather. And so those of us who want a "middle path" will continue to ask others to let us know if you come across a video on how to construct a 55 gallon stationery papercrete mixer with a fa irly small but strong motor that can handle the mixing. Thanks. Regarding recent posts on somewhat peripheral issues I have to say that this group seems to be quite reasonable about almost everything. I have to say I enjoyed many of the comments by Calle and others. It seems fairly obvious that issues relating to codes and what you can and cannot build affect everyone. This is politics. And so here is a suggestion that is a "middle way". Why not consider having one or two days at the end of a month be your "get out the steam" days in order to vent about issues related to papercrete building and codes and how some are actually dealing with those issues. Part of the reason I need to know how to build a smaller mixer is because I'm sure my state has uniform codes and I want to start with smaller projects. Perhaps a shed. On another level we can work with those who represent us to maximize our independence and freedom while understanding that we live in an interdependent world. ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
