I think it is in the grass family just as bamboo is but I don’t think that that is bamboo.

I looked around the net, didn't find enough information to tell the difference between several varieties. Man, some types are expensive! Would love to have some of that Japanese Timber Bamboo, 75' tall and 6" in diameter.
