Winning Rensselaer Student Featured on ConcreteThinker.comHenry Miller, a student at New York's Renssalear Polytechnic Institute, combined materials to create a unique concrete mix with local flavor. Miller used recycled content found in local brownfields with portland cement to produce a sustainable wall design that could be replicated by a range of developing communities around the world. The innovative combination of portland cement with recovered materials earned him the top prize in the recently completed 2007 Concrete Thinking For A Sustainable World International Student Design Competition.Miller was inspired to global action by the many landfills within his local community and found value in sites that had long since been abandoned. By using recovered materials rather than a virgin mix, Miller created a cost-effective, locally-sourced system that limits its environmental footprint.Third Annual Sustainable Design Competition Registration
Scheduled for DecemberPortland Cement Association (PCA), with its partner, the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), will open registration for the Third Annual Concrete Thinking for a Sustainable World International Student Design Competition in December. The contest challenges students to develop innovative and sustainable solutions using cement-based products.Winning students, their faculty sponsors, and schools will receive prizes totaling nearly $50,000, including a cash prize of $10,000 divided among the top winners in each category. Registration begins in December and the deadline for submissions is June 2008....SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS
Supported by Concrete, Green Roofs Improve Energy Performance, Stormwater ManagementA growing trend in sustainable development is the "green roof." While it appears to be a simple roof top garden, this building cover provides significant sustainable benefits. In a green roof, soil, waterproofing, a drainage system and filter, are layered on a rooftop to allow vegetation to be planted and maintained.
Green roofs provide stormwater management benefits and improved energy performance for the structures they adorn. Field studies in Ottawa, Canada, found that a six-inch thick green roof reduced heat gains by 95 percent and heat losses by 26 percent compared to a reference roof. In addition, the vegetation and topsoil in a green roof absorb stormwater, minimizing the need for rooftop drainage systems.Concrete is the structural system of choice for vegetated roofs. It provides a continuous load-bearing surface for the potentially moist growing medium and plants. Applications such as cast-in-place concrete provide a uniform surface ideal for this application/technology. Learn more about green roofs...SUSTAINABLE SPOTLIGHT
"Mass Walls" Create Thermal Envelope for Energy SavingsBuildings with exterior concrete walls, also called mass walls, utilize less energy to heat and cool than similarly insulated buildings with wood or steel frame walls. During the course of a day, building systems respond to changing conditions in outside air temperature, occupant and equipment activity, and incident solar energy. A building with thermal mass has the capacity to store warmth or cold and:
- Moderate indoor temperature fluctuations
- Slow the transfer of heat through the building envelope
- Store energy and shift peak energy requirements
Building design and occupancy significantly impact the energy savings due to thermal mass. In low-rise residential buildings (houses and apartments), for example, heating and cooling loads are primarily determined by the thermal performance of the building envelope. Holcim and Italcementi Named to Dow Jones Sustainability IndexIn a convergence of sustainability and finance, the cement companies Holcim, Inc. and Italcementi are included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI). Holcim, a long-time member of the Index, was named a "Leader of the Industry" for the third year in succession. Italcementi joined the Index this fall. The DJSI was the first global index to track and assess the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Companies are assessed for the index based on economic, environmental and social criteria.

The Environment and Energy Awards program honors facilities in North America that go beyond regulations and local laws and government regulations to improve environmental performance.
The Knoxville facility was recognized for enhancing its water injection system to reduce NOx emissions by 15 percent, while recovering water that would have been discarded as waste in the process. Working with local automotive shops and other businesses, CEMEX collected oily water that it added to the water injection process. The oil in the injection system acts as a barrier that further reduces NOx emissions. As an added benefit, collecting runoff for the water injection process from area businesses conserved approximately 260,000 gallons of water.

Sustainable Development Seminar Scheduled for New York
The New York City Concrete Promotion Council (NYCCPC) sixth annual symposium on October 30 is entitled "Concrete LEEDing the Future of NYC's Skyline." Co-sponsored by NYCCPC and the New York U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) chapter, the event will include an industry panel of local experts discussing the use of concrete in the construction of sustainable building structures. The panel discussion will be moderated by Michael Fletcher, Essex Cement, and include representatives from the Mayor's Office, USGBC, and local architects and engineers. NYCCPC's High-Rise Market Committee, chaired by PCA's Mike Mota, organized the event. Registration information (PDF)
2007 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo
The foremost event for the sustainable construction community the Greenbuild International Conference and Expo will take place November 7-9, 2007, in Chicago, Ill. The Portland Cement Association (Booth 1170) will be among the exhibitors in the Concrete Solutions Pavilion, the section of the exhibit hall devoted to organizations that offer sustainable solutions made possible by cement-based products.
