[papercreters] Re: looking for small batch recipe help

Sorry I had not answered, just saw this tonight. Been down sick for a few days.

We have done a bit of experimenting. Have not decided on our final mix yet but for quantities we ended up going with a large coffee can and using
1 tightly packed can of dry shredded paper from our crosscut shredder.
2/3 of that can full of Portland cement
and 1/3 of that can full of sand.

We used a heavy duty drill (like a hole hawg) and a drywall mixer blade to mix it with. Took quite a bit of water this way.

Would recommend soaking paper first next time. Then mixing, putting into our mold. Has had over a month drying time now and we are very happy with the brick it made.

Our new store is now open and keeping us very busy, so have not had time to try any further testing. Though when my husband decided to try speeding up drying by putting one brick we made in the oven of my wood fired cook stove for awhile it overheated on one end and started smoldering. Took it outside and set on gravel in driveway and waited to see what it would do. Of course it eventually turned completely to ash but there were never any flames and it took overnight for the block to smolder itself into ash.

Hope to get more testing done later this year.

Good luck with your trials, please let me know how it goes. We are far from ready to build but always ready to learn more.
