And yep, you can't beat homegrown free range eggs, my girls do a fine job.  I keep my neighbors supplied too when they're laying too good.  Hens are pretty quiet for the most part, it's those roosters that catch neighbor's ears.  I used to lose quite a few chickens to coyotes but since we've had an alpaca free ranging the property, he doesn't let any type of canine even think about trying to come through the fence.  My own dogs won't even go back there.  He also chases after skunks, which has left us smelling pretty bad around here on more than one occasion.  Llamas do the same thing, not that you could keep either in your garden!
 
You should really consider cob for your project though, even little children can really get involved in building with cob.
