[papercreters] Re: Clay versus cement

I have no idea what the tipping point is for adding clay to
papercrete to prevent smoldering. I'd be reluctant to assure my
experiments would give an accurate indication of results for others
on this particular issue anyway. I suspect that native clay dug from
the ground at my site will have different characteristics than the
clay dug from another site, and commercially purchased bagged clay
will probably be different from native clays. This has the potential
of skewing the results. This is pure speculation on my part. I've
not conducted any tests to quantify if this is the case.

This is another topic that would be very interesting to research
using a series of tests from a variety of people in a variety of
locations.

My experience does show that sand has an impact on the compressive
strength characteristics of papercrete. My tests have also shown
that sand has a relatively small impact upon flamability and
smoldering. The fine mineral content components (cement and clay)
and borax have shown to have the greatest effect on all forms of
combustion.

Hope this helps.
