Hmmm. Expanding on that a bit, could you use sand instead?
Essentially, make each block a box with no lid and fill them in place?
Your compressive form should be fairly simple then, I think. And sand
is generally easy to acquire. As an alternative, you might be able to
get crushed glass from a landfill or use local rock or other local
alternatives.
Try to keep our "green-minded" folks in mind, remember that the more
local our consumption is, the cheaper it tends to be (both
economically and environmentally).
