[papercreters] Re: Paper create -new to field

Hi Nelda!

Welcome to Papercreters. Your first post is interesting. I sure
thought I'd seen you post before, but I guess not. I hope you'll
find the group as fun and informative as the rest of us do. (Am I
pretending well?) :) heh heh heh

You've mentioned that you have some lead time before you need to
plaster/stucco your foam walls. This is great. Take advantage of
this time.

EXPERIMENT!!!

The first question I have is, "Will papercrete stick to your foam
walls?" If you can find a mix that will adhere to the foam, whether
you're using supporting wire or not, it will be a LOT easier. It's
worth spending a little time on some small samples to find out.
Don't be discouraged if your first attempt doesn't give results you
like. That's why you should experiment.

Keep in mind that some wonderful looking wet slurries can crack and
get ugly when they dry. Other slurries may not look so great wet,
but dry to make something great.

You mention you plan on using wire. This may be a very wise choice.
Until you've tested it and proven it will work the way you want it to
how can you know for sure? Personally I think it makes sense, but
I'd want to KNOW for sure before I invested time and money.
Experiment with different methods of attaching the wire to the foam.
Usually stucco wire is nailed to wood framing. I doubt nails would
be very effective in your foam. Experiment with this too.

Imagine how heartbreaking and frustrating it would be to spend a few
weeks plastering away only to find that the particular mix you chose
cracks terribly after trying for 2 months? Be sure! Test it NOW!
Long before you feel pressured to get the job done before winter hits
you want to be certain your system will work well.

I strongly suggest that you go ahead and invest the money in a
Tirolessa. It will save you HUGE amounts of hand labor. Take good
care of it. Keep it very very clean. When you're all done, you
should be able to resell it. The key is getting access to an air
compressor to power it. A tirolessa needs lots of air.

If the sprayer isn't within your means, it can be done by hand, but
it will take a lot longer to do.

Long story short. My advice is to start RIGHT NOW by using a bucket
of Bob Merrill's mix or John Calipso's mix and experiment. Try it
out on a small patch of wall. Both John and Robert have used
papercrete over chicken wire. Be certain you like what happens
before you commit yourself to doing it a certain way.

When you're ready for the big plastering job won't it be nice to have
full confidence that your work will do the job well?

You will want your windows installed before stuccoing the outside.
Plan for this.

Keep in mind that you will want to have all your electrical work
finished before you plaster your interior wall surfaces. Plan ahead.

Hope this helps.
