[papercreters] Hemcrete

Just ran across this -

Code 4 hemcrete development to be constructed

03 June 2010

A Code 4 development is to be built using Tradical Hemcrete - a hemp and lime thermal walling system.

The group of 42 homes has been dubbed The Triangle and is the first project by Hab Oakus, a joint venture between Kevin McCloud and a housing group called GreenSquare.

Some of the units will be built to Code 5 on the Code for Sustainable Homes, following design plans from Glenn Howells Architects.

Grant Shapps, the minister of housing and local government, told Mr McCloud: "I know that projects like the one we're starting off today are really important because they lead the way, they show what's possible, and they give a sense of ambition.

"I have to say that we're very grateful to everyone involved in this incredible project for getting it going."

The Tradical Hemcrete not only provides insulation for the buildings, but it also absorbs carbon dioxide during its manufacture, adding to the construction's environmental merits.

He also extolled the environmental advantages of building in hemp adding, as an afterthought, 'and if there happens to be a fire… you can smoke your own house'.
