RE: [papercreters] Re: New photos

It's all common sense, isn't it? Building sound dwellings with what we have around us. Things that last for the time we need them, or hundreds of years, then go back to being part of the landscape. I haven't visited the other sites you mentioned but have been to Chaco several times and it never ceases to amaze me. I believe it's been speculated that the fine stonework was done by women and that successive generations worked on the same buildings. I often think of how enjoyable and satisfying it would be to work every day with my own daughters on something like that knowing they would carry on after I was gone and teach their daughters. I try to remind myself of these things when I get so impatient at my own progress on my little project. It really helps to put things in perspective.

I recall visiting Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Canyon DeChelly, and a
few other sites back in the 70's.

Pretty amazing stuff.

As I recall, most of those structures had very strong foundations
that nature provided. When building inside a cliff it's easy to
build on bedrock! It's hard to get a better foundation than that.
Some very intelligent engineering and construction.

Buried in the treasured family archives are a bunch of slides of
those buildings, but I'm not sure where to look for 'em. LOL.

The other thing I remember about that vacation was a really nasty
sunburn. (suprise, surprise!)

about how they constructed their buildings right on the ground with
no foundation and using nothing but stones, mud, and timbers it's
incredible they are still standing. Some of the walls at Chaco Canyon
are 5 stories high and made out of individual stones no larger than a
deck of cards or a slice of bread.
