To properly spec a foundation it is important to know ALL the loads
that it will need to hold up. Is this wall part of a structure?
Will there be a roof?
Reading between the lines of your post I'm guessing that you're
looking to build a privacy fence/wall. The vertical loads in this
case are minimal. The key to supporting this type of wall is keeping
the wall from getting blown over by a strong wind. Think fence.
Strong vertical posts to keep things stiff and upright. Many
foundation types could be used. Concrete, and concrete block are
probably the most "standard" types, but also the most expensive.
Rubble Trench, Earthbag, and Rammed Earth Tires are other options.
All would work well. I would suggest using the system you are most
comfortable building and/or the one you already have the most of the
materials on hand.
I'm not sure if this really answers your question, but maybe it will
help stimulate your ideas and maybe generate more questions. At
least it tosses out a few search terms you can google and learn
more. :)
Hope this helps

(It's been raining almost nonstop since March.) I want to experiment
with a freestanding wall made of Judith-like blocks. I have caliche
and limestone soil, with solid bedrock only a few inches below the
surface. What sort of foundation would you recommend?
