Re: A few more pics RE: [papercreters] Embedded blocks, kitchen window

I was told by one person in the local building department that I could build a 160 sq ft building without a permit, but another person in the department told me it was 120 sq ft AND if i ran water or electricity to the "shed" I would have to have a permit to build it. I have decided to go ahead with my project and hope I can fly under the radar. I am totally off the grid so I don't have any power company officials perusing my projects. To get power one must have an approved building or they will not run power to your property anyway. At any rate the price to hook up to power in astronomical so that's not in the cards. I prefer to live off grid anyway. I guess one must make a stand sometime on this so although I would prefer not to get in a dispute with the department, I may have to. I am going on 67 years old and I just want to be left alone to build my house without a lot of hassles.

I did get a red tag on the first little building. I called the inspector and explained that I was just building a storage shed and that it was under the minimum allowed without a permit. He tried to argue about the size but I had the permit application and read to him from it. Since I got away with having one building I decided to put up another one. They are both 12 X 16. I got the vigas 5 years ago when they were thinning the forest in Los Alamos. They were free but I had to pay $350 delivery. They have been sitting out in the weather and will not be much good for anything soon. At least I'll have a god supply of fire wood.

How big is this building? How did you escape the building dept. boys? Aren't you in the same area as your first house that got red tagged? Enough for the questions, I really like the looks of the vigas in the roof. Down here in the extreme desert in SW Arizona, it is hard to find any poles or posts of any kind. I'm going to keep looking though.

Thanks so much Ev. I go back and forth between being thrilled at how far the project has come along and being gripped by anxiety over what still needs to be done. And this is the second building, not the one we started when you were here. That one is a little behind but I had to promise my helpers I would at least try to finish something.

What great progress you have made, Judith, and the view out the kitchen window WOW! It must feel great to be at this point on your project.

[Attachment(s) from JUDITH WILLIAMS included below] Here's a pic of how the embedded blocks look in the wall. This is where we cut out for the window. the pic should be rotated 1/4 turn so it is upright and easier to understand. The other pics show how thick the piece was that came out of the wall and the window in place.
