I was told by one person in the local building department that I could build a 160 sq ft building without a permit, but another person in the department told me it was 120 sq ft AND if i ran water or electricity to the "shed" I would have to have a permit to build it. I have decided to go ahead with my project and hope I can fly under the radar. I am totally off the grid so I don't have any power company officials perusing my projects. To get power one must have an approved building or they will not run power to your property anyway. At any rate the price to hook up to power in astronomical so that's not in the cards. I prefer to live off grid anyway. I guess one must make a stand sometime on this so although I would prefer not to get in a dispute with the department, I may have to. I called the inspector and explained that I was just building a storage shed and that it was under the minimum allowed without a permit. He tried to argue about the size but I had the permit application and read to him from it. Since I got away with having one building I decided to put up another one. They are both 12 X 16. Down here in the extreme desert in SW Arizona, it is hard to find any poles or posts of any kind.
