You mean besides the original sale of the DVD, correct? My
understanding is that you have to purchase every copy that you rent
out. And even DVD's wear out, get broken, etc. I would suggest small
DVD makers make note of the address of this company and simply not
sell anymore to them as a first step.

I would hate to see them disappear as well, but there are many
avenues they can explore. In this digital age there are many methods
for selling limited viewing capabilities for "trial" versions that
would compete with rental companies at a lower price (and not be
easily distibutable beyond the original viewing). They can also
include a short notice at the beginning / end of their videos about
how to purchase the video directly from the manufacturer.
Lastly on the note of books going out of print, there have been
recent advancements there as well with micropublishing and ordering-
for-print that may make many out of print books available again in
print form. Technology can cure some ills, even as it can cause
others.
