Buying a single 6 cu. ft. bag of perlite I get the same price that Clyde does for buying 4
pallets at a time. $20 for the bag, which works out very closely to his cost of $3.50 per cu.
ft. His 4000 cu. ft. at $1.50 per cu. ft. is a great savings but it cost him $6,000 all at once
to get that deal.
As for fireproof paperadobe, below are links to photos of a wood burning stove made from
paperadobe block, which didn't even char after hours of use. In a 200 gallon mixer load, I
used 100 pounds of paper and nearly 800 pounds of clay soil, two fifty pound sacks of
lime which I hydrated overnight, and two 4 lb. boxes of borax. The lime and borax were
added to combat potential issues with mold and insects, as I thought both paper and earth
are prone to those two problems under certain circumstances. Even after two hours, the
outside surfaces of the stove were warm but not hot- there's enough mass to dissipate the
heat of a fire at 3.5 inches thick in these scrap blocks, and some insulation value from the
paper. The stove was held together with very long stucco nails. That's one thing I love
about this material: it holds nails and screws and can be pounded with a hammer and just
dents whereas the same blow on a concrete block of the same dimensions would shatter
it. Here are photos of the stove, the last one is a large image so skip it if you're on dial up.
