at last, something i can leave out in the rain with a benefit! does it look different when it oxidizes? presumeably it would be counter productive if it goes all the way to rust?

The people using ferrocement say that if you leave your galvanized wire/mesh sitting out in the weather for a while then the zinc oxidizes and that coating prevents the reaction between the cement and the zinc.

I used weathered galvanized stucco mesh as one side of slip forms for papercrete. After several years there is no visible reaction. YMMV
