Yes, I tested the long blades. Two issues. First is the torque, a lump of paper near the ends of the blades can stop them cold, partially caused by loose belt. Second (not really bad) is there is a tendency to sling paper out, easily solved by a top. It did a great job of mixing if I made sure there were no lumps of wet paper stuck together.
I plan to scale the whole thing down by maybe half. That will move the center of mixing much closer to the bottom of the barrel, and reduce the needed torque. Meanwhile I think I fried my motor, so this evening I'll be repairing it or taking apart an older washer or dryer for a motor.

I have been gone a few days and missed your report on testing the original mixer blades.... what changes are you making?
