You just saved me about 3 years.
I hope to experiment with coal ash, sand, and clay this winter.

I did many tests- and I always want to take all experiments to failure.. so
I left 2 blocks
sitting on the south deck exposed to the strongest weather, rain, etc. here
in th Pac NW

it took 3 years of just sitting there, exposed completely all year round for
all the edges to
crumble away and leave a mounded shape. when I picked it up it still held
together, but
was weak.

the answer is always protect the wall surface

obviously cement and sand are more permanent. but clay and sand, along with
lime and
sawdust added make a nice insulative building brick or wall infill, which
was my purpose
