[papercreters] Re: Paint that has frozen

Alaine,

Do not use any ordinary paint on papercrete. Most paint today is called water based or acrylic. Once it cures, it is waterproof. That sounds great but is not what you want for papercrete. If the paint job were exactly perfect, it would be great. But sooner or later, a small crack will occur. Then when there is rain, it gets in through the crack, migrates around in the papercrete and then cannot get back out through the rest of the paint that is still perfect.

So do not use acrylic paint, frozen or not frozen.

You may can use oil based paint. I think it will allow the moisture to evaporate. White washes, lime based plaster, and several other finishes will allow the moisture to evaporate.

The moisture from normal living (cooking, taking baths, etc.) will also get into the papercrete and needs to be able to evaporate back out.

Please let us know what you use and how it works out.

If the paint you collected is acrylic, perhaps you could use it on trim and outbuildings.

Bobby
