The way to get consistency, accuracy and quick drying is to compress the blocks in the mould. They can then be demoulded immediately, and dry far faster.
For a 6" deep block I might compress the contents by 1", so a 7" deep mould, and add a lip onto the pressing down piece so it goes down to the exact right size when stood on.
Last time I compressed rapidly by 25%, but that takes a lot of pressure. The suggested 16% or so compression will either happen slowish or you'll need a whole lot of force.
