Square footage as it compares to house construction is all about resale
value. Whether you like it or not, that's the driving force.

Ask real estate agents. If a house isn't at least 3 bedrooms and 2
baths, it doesn't sell very easily, or for the best price.

Of course, next question... why is that what sells the best?
Because that's what the masses want.

Which goes back to Evelyn's well stated paradox. Why does an
individual or a couple need such a big house to sustain such a demand?
Answer: because they want to be able to sell the house when the time
comes.

It's a self-sustaining cycle.

It has very little to do with the amount of space a person requires for
living.
