[papercreters] EGG cartons & tornado ins.

On the Egg Cartons as sound proofing--
" Larrystoy said: but I remember reading an article a few years
back about using egg cartons for sound proofing. It seems the shape of
the carton somehow deflects sound."

You remember correctly. back in the 1970s lots of noisy college age
boomer rockers lived in apts. in S. Cal, NY, Detroit, CHicago-- they
discovered that stapling up the cup side of the egg carton to apt.
walls and fully covering the whole wall would "soundproof it" and
this worked well, and even betterwhen the newer 'foam' cartons came
out... long time ago.

I remember hearing about people who spray painted them ( paper
eggcartons) with wildcolors and mosaics ( ie Jimmie Hendrix Peter Max
colors) cause it did not affect the wall beneath...which made the
landlord happy
++++++++++++++++++
Tornados-

" we do tend to get a tornado from time to time and if insurance
wouldn't cover a papercrete structure then all the money and effort
would be lost. any thoughts?

SInce the house COULD be wood framed but walls infilled with blocks
or slipcast papercrete, then it is just part of the wall system... and
insurable as anything else. If the entire structure was igloo like
--all papercreteblocks-- but this is less possible asit isnot astrong
loadbearing material.. something has to hold the roof up, unless it is
a dome shape,, which may not get you standard home insurance in any
case being an "odd" shape. It may be "safer" to build 1/2 standard
steel or wood framing, and 1/2 the infil wall as papercrete to be
insurable.

You can put up sheetrock over the PC JUST to ensure the 1.5 hour burn
requirement for fire ins. vs just plastering over rough PC blocks
and not getting insured...

the further you get from the 'norm' the harder it may be...untill
enough people have managed to involve and sway building depts, and
codes locally.
