This statement is incorrect:

Clay has no natural affinity to anything. That includes wood fibre. It will not coat individual wood fibres but will mix between the wood fibres.
It does not expand on coming in contact with water.

Clay definitely clings to many materials (although not lumber or OSB) and clay DOES expand when coming in contact with water. That's why it SHRINKS when drying and too much clay will give you cracks.

There are many different kinds of clays.  Bentonite is used to waterproof ponds. Don't ever use it in adobe or papercrete as it expands so much when it gets wet.  There's a fascinating Nova documentary on using clay as ROOFING material in old monasteries in Tibet (or somewhere in that region). 

If you use clay, you need to test YOUR clay and use varying amounts.
