I had a lot of odd sized blocks left over from the previous project so cut them on the table saw to fit between slip forms. I poured a thick layer of slurry into the forms then placed the blocks about 2 to 3 inches apart and poured more slurry on top and between. This worked so well (started out just to use up old blocks) that I am designing my entire new project around it. The walls go up so fast and are very neat looking. Also I believe that the dry blocks (moistened a little before placing) being placed in wet slurry help the whole thing to dry faster. I am now making blocks 30" long and just wide enough to fit into the forms, 12". I believe with this method I should have the walls up in a very short time without having to enlist much help.
I'm sure that if you took a poll you would find there are many different reasons for working with papercrete. For me it is primarily because I want to do it myself without having to hire people or arrange for volunteers. I have had a lot of help from my friends but am constantly refining things to cut down on that. The second thing is that it is so inexpensive. I have no money to work with but the time to gather and recycle things and work out ways to use what is available. If I had money I would probably still want to do this as much as possible. I also really like the finished product, the high R value, the thick walls, soundproofing, sculptability, ease of finishing with natural plaster, and so many other things.
Maybe we should take a poll to see what everyone thinks.
