You seem surprisingly familiar with my area being from Iowa. I do have a well that brings up 108F mineral water. 

You bring up some good points about sand. I have been using large quantities of sand for these reasons:

- strengthen the mix
- reduce portland cement - portland issues -  (cost, transportation, storage, carbon)
- reduce flammability
- reduce dry time
- reduce costs

The structures I am building are small and the insulation is thick enough at 12" that I don't mind giving up a little R-value.
