Most of my mixing lately has been with a spray washer, 25# paper 15# portland and spray it until a drum is full. End product weighs in the range of 10# per cubic foot, sounds like a piece of wood when you knock on it.
I tried expanded perlite about eight years ago, didn't see the advantage since it comes from far away in Arizona, and more paper and opc is cheaper. I never did like sand or dirt in the mix since it is plenty strong enough for my purposes, and insulates well.
