Re: [papercreters] Fireproof papercrete

Seems to me that you'd want to select the right material for the job. If you want to build a fire pit, you'd most likely want to use concrete blocks or brick, not wood, plastic, rubber...or papercrete. Not every material is good for everything, why misapply the material?

If you want some insulation on your pit, perhaps you could use papercrete on the outside of some bricks or concrete that lines the pit?

Papercrete does not burn with a flame, but (depending on your mix) will smolder and eventually be consumed. This takes a lot of time and there is a distinctive odor of smoke that should clue you in long before it is a big problem. There is no flame spread rating because there is no flame. You certainly can't say that about most other types of construction.

There have been people who did use papercrete to line a fire pit, and they said that the bricks held up well. If you get in the range of 4:1 portland cement to paper you might be able to get away with it, but the lighter mixes will smolder.

livinginpaper. com mentions adding boric acid and borax to papercrete

But does anyone know if it is really fireproof.

I have an idea to use papercrete to make a firepit as I imagine it
would be cheaper and lighter than concrete, but is there such a thing
as flameproof papercrete? I have never built with papercrete before so
I'm a total noob and would appreciate any advice.
