[papercreters] Re: ink issues?

Everyone and every organization seems to quote different statistics. Here's an article called
"Print Green With Soy Ink" http://www.articlealley.com/article_222849_10.html

"The pigments and chemicals added to soy ink are similar to that used in petroleum-based
ink; hence soy ink cannot be termed as 100% biodegradable. ...advantages of soy ink
have made it almost a unanimous choice by the printing industries, especially in the US. In
fact, the use of soy ink in the US market has registered a significant leap from less than
5% in 1989 to approximately 23% today." This was published in 2007

I agree that soy ink is better for people than petroleum based ink, but here again is an
article, written in late 2007 by the Allen Press, which claims:

"Myth – soy based ink contains no petroleum
Reality – government requirement for soy ink is 7% soy. Most soy inks have as much as
60% petroleum." So who do we believe, and do you actually care? It's hard to know who to
believe, especially when we know that 5, 10, or 20 years from now science will determine
that everything we learned and knew was false.

In my experience, all truths are open to interpretation and "facts" often depend on who's
paying for them to be published. Again, I DON'T CARE ABOUT INK OR CEMENT BEING
GOOD OR BAD. I'm just here pointing out that there aren't many things which are so darn
goody good for you and the environment that we can pat ourselves on the back for
building green. Let's not even talk about the bleaching process of paper and what that
does to streams-- let's just be happy that when we get the paper, it isn't significantly
toxic to us, and that its a cheap and viable building material.
