RE: [papercreters] Re: Attaching things to papercrete walls

I heard the Liquid Nails for subfloors is the best. Thanks for reminding me if this important step.

Dowels could work - the reason for pullout is that all of the fibers are violated when you drill or drive the whole - get some glue for subfloors,in a caulking tube ,squirt it in the whole and then insert the dowel, otherwise the dowel will pull right out, as in the top hole of the bracket will have leverage to pull away from the wall, so its either screw in an anchor with very large threads or glue in a dowel and anchor to that - good luck tomorrow -Clyde

I have had this shelf attachment thing on my mind all day. I am moving stuff up to the papercrete building and have nowhere to put it. I had wanted to wait and do the move in an organized way but I guess that is just too foreign for me, besides my housemate is anxious to have the dining room table clear again.

I have decided to go with the dowel suggestion. I have looked at the shelf brackets and think a good long dowel of the right diameter sunk about 10 inches into the wall would not come out easily. I wish I hadn't put wood strips on the wall before I plastered. Now I will have to take them out and make it look OK. I'm going to Lowe's tomorrow to see what I can find.

Did you get your shelf hung - the problem with papercrete attachments usually stems from pullout - the screw in anchor shields work well - the shields screw in so tight i have actually striped them out with the drill - they screw in first then a separate smaller screw, screws in to them , as large as possible is best -Clyde

I have been thinking of all sorts of different ways to make sure the shelf doesn't fall down. I even looked at some of those fancy fasteners but don't know what to buy. There are some that have a plastic part the goes into the hole first and some that have little wing thingies that stick out if you put them into drywall. I also thought I would glue a decorative piece of punched tin to the wall behind where the brackets will go. I just don't know, but I want that shelf up there soon. It's a 2x12 12 feet long to span an entire wall. I have 4 beautiful cast iron brackets to hold it up.
