[papercreters] Concrete Planet

Concrete Planet is a new book that I heard a review of on the radio over the weekend. It was pretty interesting as the author was talking about structures that are thousands of years old and still functional while our infrastructure has a maximum useable life of 50-100 years.

He says that using iron (rebar) for reinforcement is a fatal flaw since it will corrode eventually swelling to 4-5 times it's size and destroying the concrete around it which made me think of alternative reinforcing materials that some papercreters are using. He also said that some of the structures dating back to antiquity used volcanic ash instead of portland which made me wonder whether Judith's lava rock and the folks that use fly ash might provide an additional element of quality.

Sounds like an interesting read even though I'm not a technical type.
