Yes.. I know some very nice cobbers who got ripped off TWICE.. they
had a lockable on site trailer at the hill top, and the cob house was
a few hundred yards , and down the hill, away, shrouded by shrubs &
trees.. they lost all their tools and materials in the trailer while
they were down on the site sleeping.
and when they pitched at tent on the trailer site, they had materials
stolen down at the house... is was horrible for them and on top of it
lousy neighbors turned them in for the 'weird stuff' they were
building without even coming and talking to them. they recommend
talking to neighbors. but I am not sure
old out of date webpage- but has cob house images
http://www.northcoast.com/~tms/cobhouse.html
[after years of struggle they finally decided to go full code and it
has been costly]
another out of date page: http://www.northcoast.com/~tms/papercrete.html
but papercrete images & info
They say the best thing is to scope out the neighbor mentality, be
as low key and nonthreatening or "wild eyed" hippie as possible and
talk to them first...so they are in the loop...
OR plan to not talk to them at all and have a ready made " tool shed"
story on what you are building-- as in a garden shed or experimental
site.
people freak out on their own "property values" without considering
your rights too.. even though the cob house was acres away, and
unviewable to anyone else..people can be meanspirited.
even standard house building neighbors can be jerks, so it's the luck
of the draw.
some people want a community of likeminded people on hundreds of
acres.. like Emerald earth emeraldearth.org and others...
City of the Sun in NM ( AZ?) is like this.. a closed environs-- but
they all have rules too
PAPERCRETE ART there is a site called "paper, clay & mud pies" - as
an art offshoot of papercrete, not very active, but there is a "mosaic
art" site where the women are using papercrete and paperclay and
products like PaverPol from Sweden to sculpt art of all sizes.
these commercial products have fine clay and pulp paper, lime and
other fine sand in them, and when mixed with water and additives can
form ceramic like art that is not fired, but dries in air.
