Re: [papercreters] Impeller pump mixer?

Robert Merrill (who is a member of this group ) has photos of a colloidal mixer in his albums in the group photos. If I understand them right, that is pretty much the way colloidal mixers work. Maybe Robert will pitch in here?

I think you could definitely use the pump as a mixer. I started making a smaller version from an old dishwasher which has a circulating pump. It is tiny, and a fractional hp motor, so probably would not mix very fast if it even has the power to break down paper.

I have a 3,000 gallon water tank that you could hook that pump to, and it would process the whole tank every six minutes. A few cycles through your impeller should make nice pulp. The tank has 4" outlet at the side bottom, and 18" hatch on the top. You could mix a whole wall at once. Find a tank (you have a good source) that will hold a thousand gallons or so, put a diverter Y valve on the output so you can hose it into forms after it is mixed, and post pictures!

OR, bring that beast here and we'll run a 1,500# bale of shredded paper through it. Didn't you once say you bought it on ebay for about a grand?

I don't think we have discussed this idea here in the open. I have a 4" full trash rated pump that supposedly will pump water with up to 1.5" rock in it. I use this pump for my pool pumping business I pump out nasty pools.( http://fresnopool.com ) No im not trying to sell you a pool pump, just to show you some of the pictures that it does pump all kinds of crap. Anyhow What if you started with a say 1000 gallon water tank 1/2 or whatever filled with water and put the pump intake at the bottom of the tank and the discharge at the top (the pump pumps 500 gallons per minute) Then add paper raw at the top, let it get sucked down into the whirlpool vortex and into the pump which would pulp it? I wonder if you could continue adding paper until you get the desired mix your looking for? Ideas?
