[papercreters] Solar Drying PC blocks- by personx

personx said: I'm thinking of making a solar shed of some short to help in
drying the blocks.

HI X- one thing that has been done in Oregon ( Eugene area) where it
is wet alot and hot alot,,, on a community site they used old slider
doors and laid them over rows of newly made wet PC blocks. the
slider glass was suspended/supported by straw bales all around, [or
cinder blocks] and gave insulation and suport for the solar drying
of the blocks.

once dried a bit they made another big area of wet pc blocks next to
the dry ones and
each set of bales is easly moved to the next area of blocks, and the
slider moved over to cover them.

it was ingenious and simple, and easy to do with no building of a shed etc.

even if you used bales and heavy plastic tarp you could achieve a
passve solar oven to dry the blocks.

see www.lostvalley.org

they may have pics of their papercrete
pumphouse etc.. or I can email you a couple, offlist--

when I was making small blocks in a metal grocery rack I would place
old glass windows over the frame and it does speed the dryiongtime.

the grocery rack is that plastic coated wire -4' long, and is U
shaped, so I laid newspaper inside and up the sides, and just poured
in my fiberclay wet mix,and left to dry...a drywall trowl (long &
thin blade) was used to slice up the blocks when still damp for the
right size. when dry the blocks were set between studs in my studio
